Mackay Regional Council Campaign 'Try the 5'

MACKAY'S high obesity rate is being tackled head in a new council campaign, 'Try the 5'.

The active campaign includes more than $10,000 in prizes, both weekly and major, to encourage residents to get physical.

Mayor Greg Williamson was at Blue Water Lagoon Thursday morning to kick off Try the 5 along with members of the community heavily involved with exercise.

Mr Williams said: "Inspiring our community to get of our backsides and try something in the month of May, a beautiful month, its the best month to do it. "You can jump on our website, what we are really encouraging you to do is not just get active but to share it as well, so the more sharing we can get on social media the better it will be.

"We actually know from the department of healths recent figures on Mackay and in the last six months we have a fairly high obesity ratio in Mackay, in fact probably the highest in regional Australia, that's not something to be proud of."

There are two major prizes on offer, two nine day South Pacific crusies for two adults on board Carnival Spirit plus a $400 on board credit.

People can show how they are getting involved in the campaign by sharing photos or videos of them being active to the council's Facebook page, upload them to council's website or use the hashtag #trythe5 on Instagram.

Anyone who shares photos or videos will be entered in random draws for weekly prizes.

The major prizes at the end of the campaign will be awarded for best photo and video.

The Mackay Marina Run on Sunday on June 3, will be the last opportunity to enter the competition .
