Super Sprint Race Weekend - 9-11 December 2022

2022 Super Sprint Race Weekend (SSRW) for U23 Juniors, Youth, Open and Rookies from across Queensland converge for 3 days of high intensity racing and competition.  Held at the Gold Coast Performance Centre at Runaway Bay, this centre is in a league of its own with a Crit track, athletics track and 50m pool all side-by-side!   Coach Nikki spent the weekend down on the Gold Coast supporting our Junior U23 athletes – Jared and Angus.  First timers to the event, however familiar to triathlon both Angus and Jared thrived with the weekend’s events!

Day 1 of the Super Sprint Race Weekend saw some fast and furious racing with our U23 Juniors tackling the Le Mans (250m run / 5.5km bike / 250m run), Aquathon (400m swim / 800m run) and Mixed Relay (200m swim / 5.5km bike / 800m run) – 3 short and fast races that were delivered with precision and determination!  Our juniors did not know what had hit them it was fast, however both did well on the first day of racing!  This is why we practice transitions! A very big birthday surprise to Angus as he woke up 15 that morning - the youngest of the U23 Junior division!

Day 2 was another big day of racing for our Juniors backing up for a Triple Sprint. The races did not disappoint with those competing executing some of the most exciting and fastest racing that our Juniors have ever experienced.  The triple event comprised of: Race 1: 250m swim / 6km bike / 1.2km run; Race 2: 1.2km run, 6km bike, 200m swim; and Race 3: 250m swim / 6km bike / 1.2km run.  A back-to-back morning was a tough gig with both boys focussing on their recovery, nutrition and hydration for the finals on day 3!

Day 3 was the triathlon finals with athletes backing up for their third day straight!  This racing is tough and aggressive especially under hot conditions.  Jared qualified for the A Final and Angus the B Final.  Both executing a 300m swim / 8km bike / 1.6km run, the longest race of the weekend, just a little more to squeeze out.

Both Angus and Jared did us proud in executing their skills, resilience and determination over the three days.

Jared placed 12th with a total time 2:14:49 and 15th overall

Angus placed 27th in time 2:34:55 and 27th overall

Tri-ActiV8 has previously had juniors represent at this event, however our goal is to grow our junior programs and in the coming years grow the junior participation at this event.
