About the Backyard Ultra Concept

The Backyard Ultra format is straightforward yet relentlessly challenging. At 8:00 AM on Saturday morning, all competitors set off together to complete a 6.7-kilometre trail loop. If you finish the loop in 45 minutes, you have 15 minutes to rest, refuel, and prepare before the horn sounds again for the next hour's lap.

Fail to line up inside the starting corral when the next hour strikes, or take longer than 60 minutes to complete a lap, and you are officially marked DNF (Did Not Finish). The event continues until only the final solo runner remains, or through 24 full hours of camaraderie and endurance.

About the Distances

Juniors & Short Course (1 Lap)

1 lap of fun and achievement! Starts 3pm Saturday 17 April.

Mid Course: 12 Laps (80.4km)

Running 6.7km every hour on the hour for a challenging duration of 12 hours is no small feat! This unique adventure will give you a taste of the Back Yard Ultra. Athletes will be given two options for start times - 8am or 8pm. Compete solo or recruit a team of 2-4 to share the load (especially if you want to do 3-6 laps!).

Long Course: 24 Laps (160.8km)

24 hours truly serves as the ultimate test of endurance, mental strength, and determination. Get ready to embrace the challenge and discover your limits! Go Solo or recruit a team of 2-4 to share the load. Start at 8am and finish by 8am on Sunday!

Team Entry (Relay)

You want to go longer than one lap but can’t quite hit 12 or 24 laps solo? Team up with 1 or 3 others and conquer the distance together. Whether you swap every lap or run long stints, it doesn’t matter how many each person completes — as long as the bib keeps moving, the team keeps going.

Race Rules

Rules ▼

In order for our events to run as smoothly as possible we ask all athletes to cooperate and stick to our rules and regulations:

  • No rego, No run! – Please respect our event, we have permissions from landowners, local and state authorities and have insurances to cover our athletes. Please do not jeopardise our licences and insurances by running without a registration.
  • Race bib – Please make sure you retain your race bib for the entire series. Race bib must be worn on the front of your body, this ensures correct detection of your timing chip by the electronic timing system. The timing chip can not be worn on your wrist or carried in your back pack, this might cause the timing chip to not be picked up by the antenna at the finish line. No shortcuts – please stick to the marked track, for safety and fairness reasons. All courses are clearly marked and we have marshals out on the course.
  • Fitness level – you don’t have to be the fittest to do this challenge. If you can run 10km in 80-90mins you will be able to achieve 6km in the hour.
  • Stick to the left side of the trails at all times.
  • Treat other competitors, officials, volunteers and spectators with respect and courtesy
  • Dress Code – please wear appropriate clothing and suitable running shoes
Running Etiquette ▼
  • Do not leave any rubbish behind, this is a Private Lease Area. What you bring in you must take out.
  • Keep left and give way to runners passing from behind.
  • Don’t approach any wildlife you may come across on the trails.
The Course ▼
  • We reserve the right to modify the course without notice, as well as reschedule or cancel the event in consultation with emergency services, government agencies, and event stakeholders.
  • If the event must be rescheduled, all entries will automatically carry over to the new date. In the rare event that the event is cancelled and cannot be rescheduled, registered participants will receive a credit for a future event, valid for 12 months. Please note that refunds will not be available in this situation.
